Sammy Kershaw

Part of the wave of new traditionalist country singers of the early 1990s, Sammy Kershaw specializes in modernizing old-fashioned honk tonk by singing with a light, friendly touch and a hint of the sepia-toned warmth of '70s soft rock. These qualities were evident on the streak of Top Ten Country hits he had in the first half of the '90s: "Cadillac Style" and "National Working Woman's Holiday" played upon the playful aspects of George Jones; he brought the Amazing Rhythms Ace's pub rock standard "Third Rate Romance" to the upper reaches of the country charts; while "She Don't Know She's Beautiful" showed that the Louisiana singer could temper his twang with a hint of pop. After drifting toward country-pop toward the turn of the millennium, Kershaw settled into a traditionalist sound when he went indie in the 2000s, helping him maintain a career on the road. Kershaw did return to the studio on occasion, gravitating toward his Lousiana R&B roots on such records as 2017's Swamp Poppin' and 2024's Cross Road Blues.
