Guitarist/vocalist Gary Clark, Jr. has built a dynamic, consistently surprising career by first continuing the blues-rock tradition with much flash and flair, then incorporating a wide range of genres like funk, hard rock, and hip-hop into his constantly evolving sound. Initially, Clark played his cards relatively close to the vest, emphasizing the blues heritage of his hometown in Austin, Texas and making a big splash with 202's album Blak and Blu. Clark quickly took risks other contemporary blues guitarists didn't, collaborating with R&B singer Alicia Keys and modern rockers Foo Fighters, while branching out to political protest on the charged 2019 album This Land and adding African music influences on 2024's powerful JPEG RAW.
